Charges against Thomas Sutherland, one of the nine individuals implicated in the murder and disappearance of Megan Gallagher, have been officially stayed. This decision was announced by the courts this week, although no specific reasons were given for this action.
A stayed charge indicates that the prosecution will not be pursuing legal action at this time, but the case can be reopened within the next year should new evidence come to light.
Sutherland’s trial had been scheduled to commence next month, and now only one trial remains for those connected to Gallagher’s tragic death. He was the seventh individual to face charges related to the case, which included aggravated assault and unlawful confinement.
His arrest occurred on September 27, 2022, while he was already serving an unrelated sentence at a correctional facility.
Megan Gallagher disappeared in September 2020, and it took more than two years for her remains to be discovered in the South Saskatchewan River. Her remains were identified on September 29, 2022, near St. Louis, Saskatchewan. Subsequently, on the same day as his arrest, Sutherland was charged with the unlawful confinement and aggravated assault of Gallagher by the Saskatoon police.
