Pegula Secures Charleston Open Title; Brooksby Triumphs in ATP Tour
Top-seeded Jessica Pegula emerged victorious over fellow American Sofia Kenin, clinching the Charleston Open title with a score of 6-3, 7-5. This championship marked an important milestone as it featured the first all-American final in the tournament since 1990, showcasing Pegula’s prowess on the court as she secured her second singles title of the current season and added the eighth to her career.
From the beginning of the match, Pegula displayed her dominance, breaking Kenin in the very first game. Despite some resistance from Kenin, who successfully fended off two break points before equalizing at 2-2, Pegula managed to maintain the upper hand. Kenin, showing the ability to shift the momentum in her favor, managed to take the lead for the first time during the match after saving a break point in her subsequent service game.
However, the momentum shifted again as Kenin faltered, losing her serve twice more, allowing Pegula to wrap up the opening set in just over half an hour. In the second set, Pegula faced challenges with her serve, providing Kenin with opportunities to gain a stronger foothold in the match.
Kenin capitalized on this by exhibiting her skillful backhand shots, serving for the set at 5-2 and coming close to forcing a third and decisive set. Nonetheless, Pegula showcased her resilience, saving three set points and mounting an impressive comeback by winning six consecutive games to clinch the title.
