Charli XCX Reflects on a Monumental 2024
2024 has undeniably belonged to Brat, and Charli XCX celebrated this remarkable year by sharing a collection of personal highlights on social media. Among the memories, she included behind-the-scenes footage of her collaboration with Addison Rae for the remix of the hit track “Von Dutch.”
Accompanying the slideshow on Instagram, Charli expressed her gratitude, stating, “So many highs in 2024 and I [can’t be arsed] to post them all but here’s some of my fav memories and fav people. Love you all so much and thank you for everything.”
In addition, Charli showcased a playful picture with Billie Eilish from their recent collaboration in the “Guess” music video.
Her Instagram post further featured a mix of exhilarating performances, a candid shot with A.G. Cook and her team, a glimpse of her dancing at the afterparty for the Spotify-Sweat Tour, and a distant photo from her Brat release event, which highlighted its distinctive style.
Among other memorable images, she shared a humorous clip of Troye Sivan engaging in the “Apple” dance, a selfie with Shygirl—the opening act for Sweat—and a peek at her cue cards from Saturday Night Live. Additionally, a behind-the-scenes shot featured her with fellow creatives from the “360” video, including Alex Consani and Gabbriette.
One of the more entertaining moments she shared involved her being momentarily pulled along by an airport floor cleaner during the making of the “Von Dutch” video. She also included a screenshot of a text message with a friend featuring a PDF labeled “BRAT CONCEPTS” from the previous year.
Earlier in the week, Charli released screenshots detailing the creative concepts behind Brat, long before the album’s launch. She emphasized her artistic vision by stating, “There is no explanation for what I do. The answer is always ‘no comment.’ We must cultivate desire, chaos, and destruction. The whole album campaign is high art, but it also highlights the importance of low art and celebrity, and the interplay between the two is essential.”
In her album cover mission statement, Charli boldly proclaimed, “The artwork for Brat will be obnoxious, arrogant, and bold. Some people will hate it. It will be heavily text-based, either featuring a font on a plain background or artwork on a wall or an overlooked object.”
Charli’s influence was undeniable throughout the year, highlighted by the release of an album that Rolling Stone declared as the best of 2024. The review praised her ability to encapsulate “peak-Charli-ness” in her sixth album, describing how she navigates nightlife with a thrilling intensity. “While she spins around on the dance floor, she also confronts the depth of her insecurities and fears during the inevitable comedown,” the publication noted, reflecting on the multifaceted nature of her artistry.
