OpenAI Introduces Shopping Features to ChatGPT
On Thursday, OpenAI unveiled new shopping capabilities within ChatGPT Search. This innovative feature allows users to search for products directly through the platform and complete purchases via merchant websites, enhancing the shopping experience without any external sponsorship in product placements. Notably, this update is available to all users, with or without logged-in accounts.
During a demonstration for Wired, Adam Fry, the product lead for ChatGPT search at OpenAI, explained how the updated system operates. Users seeking products such as espresso machines or office chairs receive tailored recommendations based on their specified preferences, retained memories, and product reviews sourced from across the internet.
The shopping interface in ChatGPT bears resemblance to Google Shopping. Upon selecting a product image, users see various retailers, including major names like Amazon and Walmart, displayed on the right side of the interface, complete with options to finalize purchases. OpenAI is actively testing categories like electronics, fashion, home goods, and beauty products to enhance user experience.
Product reviews presented within ChatGPT originate from a wide range of online platforms, including both authoritative publishers and community forums such as Reddit. Users have the option to direct ChatGPT to prioritize specific sources for product recommendations based on their preferences.
Unlike Google’s algorithmic method for generating product recommendations, ChatGPT aims to engage users more conversationally when interpreting product reviews and personal preferences. For instance, if a user indicates a preference for black clothing from certain brands, the system will remember this input and adjust future shopping suggestions accordingly.
