ChatGPT’s new Tasks feature can schedule recurring reminders and alerts. ChatGPT can use tasks to suggest alerts and notifications proactively. Tasks is only available to ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro subscribers for now.

ChatGPT is currently testing a promising new capability designed to enhance its functionality as a digital assistant. This innovative Tasks tool, which is undergoing beta testing, introduces the ability to set up recurring reminders and notifications within the chatbot’s interface, effectively transforming it into a smarter scheduling assistant.

Users can configure regular alerts, such as a morning weather update at 7 a.m. to prepare for the day, monthly reminders for library book renewals, or notifications for colleagues’ birthdays that might otherwise slip their minds.

This advancement represents a significant shift for ChatGPT, allowing it to operate more proactively. Apart from maintaining a running list of reminders, the AI is capable of offering suggestions based on ongoing conversations. For example, if a user mentions travel plans, ChatGPT could prompt them to consider packing essentials like their passport or organizing accommodations, provided the user consents to these reminders.

To maintain user control, the function is designed to avoid any unsolicited actions, steering clear of situations like arranging a dinner date with an ex-partner without prior approval. Task management is centralized in a specific section of the ChatGPT web interface for ease of use.

Notifications regarding current tasks are accessible across devices, ensuring reminders are received whether on a smartphone or laptop. However, users are limited to managing a maximum of ten active tasks at once and can modify or cancel these as needed.

Task AI

Currently, the Tasks feature is exclusive to paying subscribers of ChatGPT Plus or ChatGPT Pro, leaving free-tier users waiting to see if they will gain access post-beta testing. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has indicated potential price increases for existing subscription tiers, even prior to the rollout of this new feature.

This development signifies a move toward a more proactive assistance model for ChatGPT, emphasizing its capability to anticipate user needs rather than merely reacting to prompts. The effectiveness of this transition relies heavily on how well ChatGPT can align with OpenAI’s promised capabilities without missteps.

AI assistants have historically faced challenges with providing accurate reminders or correctly interpreting user requests. Moreover, the allure of the Tasks feature remains uncertain, as a proactive assistant might be perceived as intrusive by some users.

Not everyone may appreciate an AI making suggestions unprompted, even if they are as simple as reminders for daily tasks like flossing.
