Chelsea Secures Young Talents Quenda and Essugo from Sporting
Chelsea Football Club has finalized the acquisition of two promising players, Geovany Quenda and Dário Essugo, from Sporting Lisbon for a total fee estimated at £62.5 million.
The Portuguese club revealed the agreements late Wednesday, noting that the 17-year-old winger Quenda will be joining Chelsea for approximately £44 million, while 20-year-old defensive midfielder Essugo will cost the Blues around £18.5 million.
Quenda, a versatile player whose prior association with manager Ruben Amorim drew interest from Manchester United, will remain with Sporting until the season concludes next year before making his way to Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile, Essugo is set to finish the current season on loan at Las Palmas in La Liga prior to his move to London.
This latest signing aligns with Chelsea’s ongoing strategy to enhance their squad with young, highly rated talent, following their earlier summer signings of Brazilian prospect Estêvão Willian and Ecuadorian sensation Kendry Páez, both aged 17.
Quenda has made significant strides at Sporting, making his debut in the UEFA Champions League last September and scoring his first league goal against Famalicao the following month. His ability to adapt in various attacking roles makes him a valuable addition to Chelsea’s future plans.
Essugo has distinguished himself as a capable anchorman, potentially serving as a backup to current Chelsea player Moisés Caicedo. However, his recent performances at Las Palmas have been marred by discipline issues, receiving two red cards in the past four matches. Despite this, he is anticipated to join Enzo Maresca’s squad in time for the Club World Cup tournament set to take place in the United States this June.
