Chelsea Handler Reflects on Life and Comedy in New Special and Book
Chelsea Handler continues to be a candid voice in the world of comedy. In a recent interview with “Extra’s” Sadie Murray, Handler discussed her latest Netflix special, “The Feeling,” as well as her new book, “I’ll Have What She’s Having.”
Handler expressed a sense of positivity, stating, “I’m joyful. I’m happy. I’m going to be optimistic during this time that we’re living in right now.” This outlook has contributed to what Murray described as a “new Chelsea Handler.”
Handler acknowledged this transformation, noting that her journey toward self-awareness began with therapy. “Once I went to therapy and found out about self-awareness, I had to change a couple of channels… I did some fine tuning,” she explained. She emphasized the importance of evolution in her work, stating, “You want to have an evolution… I was reflecting back to who I was as a child, like who was that person… I realized I was exactly the same hot mess that I am today.”
Addressing her upcoming special and book, Handler aimed to connect with her childhood self, saying, “I used that kind of as a baseline… in my special on Netflix to start as my childhood self.”
Murray highlighted the therapeutic vibe of Handler’s performance, commenting, “It felt like therapy live… a therapized Chelsea being vulnerable… You called it ‘The Feeling’ for a reason.” Handler responded, “You’ll have to watch ‘The Feeling’ to know what I’m talking about… people always ask me about why you’re so confident, you’re so fearless. And I’ve never felt particularly confident or particularly fearless.”
Reflecting on her past, Handler humorously discussed her childhood in New Jersey, expressing her eagerness to leave home at a young age. “If I could have gotten an apartment at 7, I would have,” she admitted. She also shared a lighthearted story about her entrepreneurial spirit as a child, when she attempted to launch a hard lemonade stand. “I just want to put it out there that I did try to start a regular lemonade stand, but that didn’t yield enough profit,” she recalled, illustrating her early business acumen.
In her latest comedy special, Handler doesn’t shy away from discussing her relationships with famous exes such as 50 Cent and comedian Jo Koy. When asked if she had heard from Koy, she responded, “I haven’t heard from Jo Koy, no I have not.” In contrast, she mentioned that 50 Cent remains in contact, noting, “50, I always hear from him… He’ll hear about it.”
On her dating life, Handler remarked on her desire for adventure and freedom, saying, “I want lots of men all over the world… I want a port in every call.” Reflecting on her choices, she noted, “I came out of that tunnel. I don’t have a child and I don’t have a husband. Now, I’m free and can do whatever I want.” She humorously explained her feelings on not having children, stating, “Any dog I have will tell you I shouldn’t be a mother!”
Handler also proudly celebrated her milestone birthday, recently turning 50. She shared her perspective on freedom, saying, “I do wear a bikini top, but I just like to ski in my bathing suit and just be free to demonstrate freedom to women.”
Currently, “The Feeling” is available for streaming on Netflix, alongside the release of Handler’s latest book, “I’ll Have What She’s Having.”
