Chelsea Secures Goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal
Chelsea FC has finalized the transfer of goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal, with the deal reported at £20.7 million and a seven-year contract in place.
The 22-year-old Danish player established himself as a key figure at Villarreal, making 37 appearances during the previous season, which solidified his role as the club’s primary goalkeeper.
Expressing his enthusiasm about the transfer, Jorgensen stated, “This move is a dream come true. I am very excited to have signed for Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world.” He added, “I can’t wait to get to know everyone and to start playing with all my new team-mates.”
As he joins Chelsea, Jorgensen is anticipated to vie for the starting goalkeeper position with Robert Sanchez, adding a competitive dynamic to the team’s roster.
Originally born in Sweden, Jorgensen had represented the Swedish national team at various youth levels before making a switch to the Denmark Under-21 squad, qualifying through his father’s heritage.
His journey to this point began when he signed with Villarreal as a 15-year-old, where he developed through the youth academy before making his senior debut for the club’s B team in October 2020.
Jorgensen made his first appearance in La Liga in January 2023 and has now joined Chelsea’s pre-season tour in the United States. With three matches remaining on the tour, he may have opportunities to play against Club America, Manchester City, or Real Madrid prior to their return to the UK.
Chelsea is set to kick off their Premier League season with a home match against reigning champions Manchester City on Sunday, August 18th, at 16:30 BST.
