Chicago Businesses Prepare for Democratic National Convention Amid Protest Concerns
With the Democratic National Convention (DNC) commencing on Monday, numerous businesses in downtown Chicago are taking precautionary measures by boarding up their storefronts. The heightened anticipation of protests and potential unrest related to the event is driving business owners to secure their properties.
“Given our past experiences, we feel that taking these protective steps is necessary. The city hasn’t exactly proven reliable in safeguarding businesses or citizen property during previous events,” commented Scott Shapiro, owner of Syd Jerome, as he participated in the boarding process. “We wanted to take preemptive action for the safety of our store and our employees.”
The DNC is scheduled to take place from Monday to Thursday at prominent venues including the United Center and McCormick Place. Authorities have established barricades around the United Center, and a significant police presence is already noticeable throughout the area.
Protests Anticipated During the DNC
In light of the upcoming convention, businesses across Chicago are bracing for the possibility of protests escalating. “Since 2019, our business has been victim to looting or vandalism on four separate occasions. Unfortunately, we have not received assurances from the city to enhance protections for downtown businesses,” Shapiro elaborated, underscoring the rationale behind the precautionary measures.
Reports suggest that more than a half-dozen protests are expected during the convention, which anticipates hosting approximately 50,000 attendees, including delegates, guests, and around 15,000 media representatives.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has indicated that about 150 National Guard members are on standby to assist local law enforcement as potential disruptions unfold.
Vicki Fichter, who operates Chicago Board-Up Services, noted that many business owners have begun to proactively board their properties in the last two weeks, driven by an atmosphere of unease. “It’s more cost-effective to board up rather than deal with the aftermath of broken glass,” she stated, highlighting that the measure is meant as a precaution rather than a reaction to immediate concerns.
Enhanced Security Measures in Place
As part of the preparations, over 300 officers from neighboring Illinois and Milwaukee police departments have been deputized to assist local forces during the DNC. Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling emphasized the importance of ensuring police have adequate support to maintain public safety, allowing the Chicago Police Department to focus on wider neighborhood patrols.
“It is crucial to provide our officers with all necessary resources to execute their duties effectively,” Snelling remarked after a recent training session with officers. “We acknowledge their contributions to safeguarding Chicago both during the DNC and beyond.”
Multiple Demonstrations Approved
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has publicly welcomed protestors, affirming their First Amendment rights. “They should not feel apprehensive about expressing their views,” he stated, assuring that their needs will be addressed to facilitate their participation.
Nonetheless, Superintendent Snelling has cautioned that law enforcement will not hesitate to intervene if protests escalate to violence or destruction. “We will enforce the law to ensure that our city remains intact,” he said.
Prominent Speakers at the DNC
The convention will also feature several high-profile speakers, including President Biden, former Presidents Obama and Clinton, along with Hillary Clinton, who are expected to support Vice President Kamala Harris and her stated vice-presidential candidate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
