MEMPHIS, Tenn. — In a tragic incident, a 7-year-old girl is currently fighting for her life after accidentally shooting herself on Friday afternoon, as reported by the Memphis Police Department.
Police responded to reports of an accidental injury at approximately 3:03 p.m. in the 2500 block of Elmscourt Drive. Upon arrival, officers found the child lying on a couch in the living room with a gunshot wound to her upper left thigh.
The girl’s mother informed the officers that she, along with the victim and two others, had been watching television in a bedroom earlier. She expressed confusion over how her daughter was able to access the firearm, which was believed to be secured beneath the mattress.

An officer later located the weapon beneath the mattress, identifying it as a black Taurus 9mm handgun.
The injured child was rushed to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, where she is reported to be in critical condition.
According to police, the child’s father, who claimed ownership of the firearm, was taken into custody at the hospital.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding firearm safety, particularly in homes with children. The situation brings to light the necessity of secure storage practices to prevent such tragic events from occurring in the future.
