BEIJING (Reuters) – The Chinese government reaffirmed its commitment to fostering bilateral relations with Canada, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and equity. This statement followed the recent election of Mark Carney as the leader of Canada’s ruling party and his impending role as Prime Minister.
Carney, who previously served as a central banker but has not held an elected position, secured the leadership with an impressive 86% of votes in a contest held on Sunday. He will take the reins from Justin Trudeau, who stepped down from his leadership role in January.
During a press briefing on Monday, spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry, Mao Ning, offered congratulations to Carney and urged Canada to engage cooperatively with China to enhance the relationship between the two nations.

Mao emphasized that China expects Canada to adopt an objective and rational perspective regarding its policies toward China and to embark on a constructive and practical approach in future dealings.
Carney’s election victory arrived shortly after China announced new tariffs on Canadian agricultural and food imports, totaling more than $2.6 billion. This move is perceived as retaliation for tariffs implemented by Canada in October.
The tariffs, set to be enforced starting March 20, align with the import duties—100% on electric vehicles and 25% on steel and aluminum products—imposed by Canada on Chinese goods.
Mao defended China’s actions as fully justified, urging Canada to rectify what it described as “erroneous practices” in order to establish a fair, non-discriminatory, and stable environment for businesses in both countries.
