Chipotle Announces Its First Expansion into Mexico
Chipotle Mexican Grill, the California-based fast-casual restaurant chain, is set to make its debut in Mexico, a move many have anticipated given the country’s vibrant food culture.
On April 21, Chipotle revealed its plans to open new locations in Mexico through a partnership with Alsea, a prominent restaurant operator in Latin America and Europe. The first Chipotle restaurant is projected to open in early 2026, with the company also considering further expansion opportunities in the region.
Nate Lawton, Chipotle’s chief business development officer, expressed optimism about this venture, stating, “We are confident that our responsibly sourced, classically-cooked real food will resonate with guests in Mexico. The country’s familiarity with our ingredients and affinity for fresh food make it an attractive growth market for our company.”
This latest development forms part of Chipotle’s broader strategy for global expansion. The chain had previously signed its first international development agreement in 2023 to open restaurants in the Middle East with the Alshaya Group.
Currently, the company operates several locations internationally, with three restaurants in Kuwait, two in the United Arab Emirates, and additional outlets in Canada, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. Chipotle’s ambitious plan also includes a long-term goal of operating 7,000 locations across the U.S. and Canada.
Armando Torrado, CEO of Alsea, commented on the partnership, stating, “We are proud to work with an iconic brand like Chipotle and help grow its international business for years to come.” He emphasized the importance of leveraging their extensive knowledge of the Mexican consumer and the restaurant industry to provide top-notch food experiences.
In addition to its expansion plans, Chipotle recently introduced a new menu item, Chipotle Honey Chicken, available for a limited time in North America and Europe. This dish combines the spicy flavor of chipotle peppers with the sweetness of pure wildflower honey, providing patrons with a taste of innovation while holding onto the brand’s classic offerings.
As Chipotle prepares for its entry into the Mexican market, food enthusiasts and loyal customers alike await the opening of the new restaurants, eager to experience the brand’s popular offerings in a country known for its rich culinary heritage.
