Eubank Jr Critiques £100,000 Fine for Egg Incident
Chris Eubank Jr has voiced his discontent over a recent £100,000 fine imposed on him by the British Boxing Board of Control in response to an unusual incident involving Conor Benn. The fine stems from an event during a press conference where Eubank smashed an egg onto Benn’s head, igniting a chaotic atmosphere.
Both fighters are set to meet in a highly anticipated British showdown at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on April 26, an event that will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Box Office.
The egg incident not only created headlines but also led to a significant sanction. Eubank’s team has already indicated plans to appeal against the severity of the fine, which he argues is disproportionate compared to penalties levied for more severe violations in the sport.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Eubank expressed his frustration, saying, “We are dealing with the situation. £100,000 for throwing an egg seems a little bit strong. Especially looking at what others have been fined for what would seem to be much more serious incidents over the years.”
He highlighted that past offenders have faced lesser fines for actual physical confrontations, sarcastically questioning, “100k for an egg, it’s steep.” He reaffirmed that his team would address the issue accordingly.
Eubank Jr’s promoter, Ben Shalom, has also stated that appealing the fine was a necessary course of action. The atmosphere between the two fighters has been tense, with Benn reportedly furious after the incident, necessitating security intervention to separate the two camps.
The matchup has a historical context, as both Eubank Jr and Benn are the sons of legendary boxers Chris Eubank Sr and Nigel Benn, respectively. Their initial bout, scheduled for 2022, was called off after Benn’s adverse drug test results led to a provisional suspension, which has since been lifted, allowing him to compete once again in the UK.
The rivalry has intensified over time, particularly following recent confrontations between the fighters, including heated exchanges before and after Eubank Jr’s most recent match in October.
On Benn’s demeanor, Eubank Jr remarked, “He’s an aggressive guy. He’s an emotional guy. He doesn’t know how to be calm. How to be collected. How to think before he speaks. He’s his father’s son. They’re hotheads.”
Fans can catch the action between Eubank Jr and Benn at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on April 26, live on Sky Sports Box Office.
