Eubank Jr vs. Benn: The Rivalry Resumes
On Saturday, Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn will face off in a highly anticipated boxing match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, live on Sky Sports Box Office. This bout marks a significant moment in boxing history as it revives a fierce family rivalry that has its roots over three decades back.
The matchup between Eubank Jr and Benn comes more than 30 years after their fathers, Chris Eubank Sr and Nigel Benn, clashed in the ring. The legendary fights between the two iconic boxers took place in 1990 and 1993, with Eubank Sr winning their first encounter by a ninth-round TKO, while their second bout ended in a draw. The upcoming fight represents not just a contest between the sons but also a continuation of their fathers’ storied legacy.
Originally scheduled for October 2022, the bout was postponed due to Conor Benn failing two drug tests. This Saturday, both fighters will bring their long-standing rivalry to a climactic showdown.
In addition to the main event, the fight card features notable matchups, such as Lyndon Arthur vs. Anthony Yarde in their trilogy bout, and a heavyweight clash between Viddal Riley and Cheavon Clarke. Chris Billam-Smith will also make his return following a unification defeat to Gilberto Ramirez, taking on Brandon Glanton. Meanwhile, Liam Smith will compete for the first time since his rematch loss to Eubank Jr, facing Aaron McKenna.
In a recent statement, Turki Alalshikh, Chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, indicated that the winner of this bout could earn a chance to challenge the reigning super-middleweight champion, Canelo Alvarez. “Whoever wins, we are working towards having him fight against Canelo,” said Alalshikh in February.
Both fighters will weigh in at a middleweight limit of 11st 6lbs, with a hydration clause in place that restricts them from gaining more than 10lbs between the weigh-in and fight night. Eubank Jr recently fought at 11st 5lbs, while Benn, moving up two weight classes from welterweight, weighed in at 10st 10lbs for his February victory over Dobson.
