Trump’s Approval Ratings Continue to Decline Amid Controversial Policies
In a recent analysis on MSNBC, host Chris Hayes scrutinized the plummeting approval ratings of former President Donald Trump, highlighting significant discontent in various domains such as economic policy, immigration, and federal support for health initiatives.
“What they are doing is widely unpopular,” Hayes stated during an episode of “All In with Chris Hayes.” He emphasized that Trump is eager to project an image of popularity, which he described as a central part of his political strategy. “The narrative that America is a Trump stronghold is a misconception,” Hayes explained, referring to Trump’s narrow victory margin in the 2016 election. “He won by just over a point and a half. That hardly qualifies as a landslide victory,” he added.
Delving into the specifics, Hayes noted that Trump entered office with an approval rating that, while the highest he would achieve, was also the second lowest recorded for a newly inaugurated president. “Historically low popularity has been a persistent theme for him; his approval ratings have only diminished since that point,” he remarked.
Furthermore, Hayes pointed out that even conservative outlets, such as Fox News, have acknowledged Trump’s declining numbers. He showcased a segment comparing Trump’s ratings against those of former presidents like Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and George W. Bush. “That’s a hard pill to swallow if you’re Trump, especially when you consume Fox News regularly,” Hayes quipped, noting that Trump has reacted to this negative portrayal by calling for the dismissal of Fox’s pollster. “Barely three months into his administration and he’s already questioning the validity of polls,” Hayes observed.
Hayes highlighted that Trump’s popularity has waned across critical policy areas, particularly the economy—an issue he previously claimed as his forte. Citing Fox News polls, he revealed that Trump’s disapproval rating regarding economic management had surged to 56%, compared to just 38% approval. “Being underwater by 18 points highlights a significant disconnect,” Hayes noted. He criticized Trump’s initial promises of reducing costs and pointed out that, contrary to those commitments, the reality has been one of escalating prices and a turbulent stock market.
“The current data trend paints a clear picture. It’s essential to recognize that the repercussions from tariffs and trade policies are still in the early stages of manifesting,” he warned, suggesting that the full extent of the economic fallout has yet to be felt.
Additionally, Hayes examined the growing dissatisfaction surrounding Trump’s immigration policies. He referred to recent actions taken by the administration, which have sparked backlash for perceived violations of due process. Notable instances include the wrongful deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia—a Maryland resident sent to a prison in El Salvador without trial—and the detainment of legally residing foreign college students by ICE.
“These incidents have occurred repeatedly,” Hayes remarked. “While Trump’s capabilities in branding and marketing are undeniable, his governance skills appear lacking. Initially, the appeal drew people in, but the underlying substance has left much to be desired.”
“Take a look at the statistics,” he urged. “The current landscape shows that they lack the support of the American populace. The data clearly supports this conclusion.”
