On Friday night, MSNBC host Chris Hayes faced criticism for allegedly using footage from independent journalist Jason Koebler’s work without proper attribution during an episode of his show, “All In.” When Koebler raised concerns about this on X (formerly Twitter), Hayes responded with an apology that many considered inadequate. He acknowledged the oversight, stating, “100% my bad. Very sorry. Should have credited, and just a mistake not to,” while expressing understanding over Koebler’s frustration.
The segment in question discussed microtargeting strategies for the upcoming 2024 election, featuring videos of social media advertisements aimed at Muslim and Jewish voters. These ads had been disseminated by a pro-Trump PAC, which is backed by Elon Musk. However, Koebler pointed out that he was the one who had invested substantial time in sourcing the Snapchat data used in the segment.
In a pointed inquiry on X, Koebler questioned Hayes directly about the origins of the video used in the segment, asking, “where did you pull this video from? how did you get it? how did you know about it? did you get it from the independent journalist-owned publication that you didn’t mention and didn’t link to?” He also emphasized the importance of crediting original sources.
Continuing his thread, Koebler challenged Hayes by asking if the MSNBC team came across the material independently or if they had sourced it from his widely shared article and tweet. He further questioned whether Hayes’ team had conducted the necessary research on Snapchat’s extensive CSV files themselves or if they simply consulted with a reporter from the New York Times who lacked the full story.
Koebler’s original piece, titled “This Is Exactly How an Elon Musk-Funded PAC Is Microtargeting Muslims and Jews With Opposing Messages,” was released just prior to Hayes’ broadcast, raising further questions about the diligence exercised by the MSNBC team in researching their content.
In the aftermath of the controversy, Koebler noted that this was not an isolated incident. He indicated that major news organizations had previously used 404 Media’s work without giving proper credit. He mentioned on X, “I have not beefed with any outlet for not mentioning us for like a year because we don’t need it. We have figured out how to make it work without you adhering to even the most basic s–t. I have ignored all of the places taking our stories without linking but come on.”
As of now, both MSNBC and Koebler had yet to respond to requests for further comments regarding this situation.
