Expansion of the 9-1-1 Universe: Introducing 9-1-1: Nashville

The ABC network is broadening its 9-1-1 franchise with the upcoming spinoff, 9-1-1: Nashville, set to debut in the 2025-2026 television season. Notable for enthusiasts of the original series, the first casting announcement has confirmed that Chris O’Donnell will take on a leading role.

In this new installment, O’Donnell will portray Captain Don Sharpe, a seasoned fire captain and skilled rodeo competitor managing Nashville’s busiest firehouse alongside his son. While Don is depicted as a loving family man and devoted husband, the character harbors personal secrets that may influence the storyline. The anticipation surrounding this character promises to add depth to the series.

During a conversation with TV Insider, showrunner Tim Minear expressed his confidence in O’Donnell’s fit for the role, highlighting a refreshing dynamic that the actor brings to the franchise. Minear recalled O’Donnell’s successful run on NCIS: LA, where he played the part of Special Agent G. Callen for 14 seasons before the series concluded in 2023.

“I believe he integrates into this franchise in a compelling manner,” Minear stated. “It will also be enjoyable for him, especially considering his strong performance on NCIS: LA. However, on Nashville, he’ll have the opportunity to explore different facets of his comedic ability.” Minear also reminisced about O’Donnell’s earlier work, particularly mentioning his role in the film Men Don’t Leave, which showcased his talent alongside actress Jessica Lange. “If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. The film demonstrates O’Donnell’s skill as an actor, and Lange’s performance is nothing short of remarkable,” he added.

The creative team behind 9-1-1: Nashville includes acclaimed writers and executive producers Ryan Murphy, Tim Minear, and Rashad Raisani. Raisani recently discussed how the new series will carve out its distinct identity within the broader franchise, drawing a comparison to how 9-1-1: Lone Star differentiated itself from the original show.

“While we hope to maintain the core elements of our established narrative, Nashville aims to develop its own unique atmosphere,” Raisani explained. “Our goal is to ensure that if we execute this vision correctly, the spinoff will resonate with a distinct feel.”

With Chris O’Donnell stepping into a pivotal role, excitement is building around the potential of 9-1-1: Nashville. Audience reactions to his casting are highly anticipated, providing another layer of engagement as the franchise evolves.
