Amazon Studios is experiencing renewed success with one of its most polarizing action films, but this time, it’s not on Prime Video. The Tomorrow War, released in 2021, has surged in popularity on Hulu, captivating viewers with its high-concept premise and star-studded cast.
Directed by Chris McKay, known for The Lego Batman Movie, The Tomorrow War features Chris Pratt in the lead role as Dan Forester, a biology teacher and former Green Beret. Alongside him, Yvonne Strahovski plays his estranged adult daughter and military scientist. The ensemble cast also includes J.K. Simmons, Betty Gilpin, Sam Richardson, and others. Notably, the film has climbed to #10 on Hulu’s streaming charts, and its popularity is likely to rise further. Below is the official synopsis that could entice potential viewers to explore this sci-fi action narrative.
“In The Tomorrow War, the world is shocked when time travelers arrive from the year 2051 to announce the dire news: humanity is losing a war against a menacing alien species. The solution lies in recruiting civilians and soldiers from the present to join the future fight. Among them is Dan Forester (Chris Pratt), a determined family man who, alongside a brilliant scientist (Yvonne Strahovski) and his estranged father (J.K. Simmons), embarks on a mission to change humanity’s fate.”
‘The Tomorrow War 2’ Is Now in the Works
Despite the intriguing concept, The Tomorrow War received mixed reviews, with a 52% rating from critics but a more favorable 76% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Originally slated for a theatrical release by Paramount Pictures and carrying a hefty budget of $200 million, the film was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, ultimately being acquired by Prime Video. In its debut week, it drew an impressive 2.41 million households, prompting Amazon to initiate plans for a sequel.
The Tomorrow War 2 is currently in the works, with Chris McKay returning as director and Zach Dean writing the script. Dean shared a promising update earlier this year, indicating that the development is moving forward. “It’s progressing. I wrote the second film. I know they’ve been continuing to develop that story. I think it’s happening, and it’s happening relatively soon,” he remarked. He also noted the character depth found in Pratt’s portrayal, citing his ability to resonate emotionally while balancing humor, setting the stage for another engaging narrative.
