[Warning: The following contains significant spoilers for the Leverage: Redemption Season 3 premiere, “The Weekend in Paris Job.”]
The third season of Leverage: Redemption kicks off with the crew in the midst of a con in France. Eliot Spencer, portrayed by Christian Kane, demonstrates his resilience as a hitter, accepting the hits as part of life in their line of work.
The plot unfolds as Eliot, along with his team—grifter Sophie Devereaux (Gina Bellman), thief Parker (Beth Riesgraf), and hacker Alec Hardison (Aldis Hodge)—finds themselves needing to escape after Eliot suffers a knife wound to his arm. As they attempt to lay low, they inadvertently become involved in another con. Parker encourages Hardison to step into Eliot’s role, especially given Eliot’s injuries, which now leave him with limited use of his left arm. In a moment of strategic improvisation, Eliot manages to free himself from being cuffed to a table to assist Hardison in fending off a guard.
Upon returning to New Orleans, Hardison checks in on Eliot, who is now sporting a sling. Eliot’s response, that taking hits is just part of the job, prompts Hardison to voice his concern about watching someone he cares about endure pain for him. He questions what it would take for Eliot to stop feeling compelled to absorb all the blows.
Christian Kane reflects on this exchange, noting, “I think it depends on the person. When Hardison articulates his feelings, it resonates with Eliot. If he’d expressed it differently, Eliot might not have taken it seriously. But he did take it to heart.” Kane emphasizes that Eliot perceives his crew as family. Until they each find their own path, Eliot remains committed to standing in the line of fire. “I think Eliot goes down taking punches. I don’t think he ever stops,” he expresses.
Dean Devlin, the executive producer, shares insights into Eliot’s character arc, suggesting that his evolution is uniquely centered on his acceptance of his past misdeeds. “His growth lies in recognizing the severity of his previous actions. The more he understands the consequences, the more convinced he becomes of his unredeemability, which propels his daily quest for repentance,” Devlin explains. This distinction between Eliot and the rest of the crew is significant; while the others experience character arcs, Eliot’s trajectory is akin to a missile, steadfastly propelling forward.
