A.R.T. to Debut “Two Strangers” Starring Christiani Pitts and Sam Tutty
Christiani Pitts and Sam Tutty are set to take center stage in the American Repertory Theater’s production of the acclaimed West End musical, Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York).
Christiani Pitts has made a name for herself on Broadway with performances in A Bronx Tale and as Ann Darrow in King Kong. Sam Tutty, who won the 2020 Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his performance in Dear Evan Hansen, has also previously starred in Two Strangers at London’s Criterion Theatre.
The musical is scheduled to make its North American premiere at the Loeb Drama Center in Harvard Square, starting on Tuesday, May 20, with an official opening date on Friday, May 30. The production will run until Sunday, June 29, 2025.
Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) features both a script and music by Jim Barne and Kit Buchan. The production team is led by director and choreographer Tim Jackson, with scenic and costume design by Soutra Gilmour. The lighting design is crafted by Jack Knowles, while sound design is executed by Tony Gayle and Cody Spencer. Earon Chew Nealey oversees hair, wig, and makeup design, with orchestrations by Lux Pyramid. Nick Finlow handles music supervision, with support from Benedict Braxton-Smith for associate music supervision, and Jeffrey Campos in charge of music direction.
Judith Schoenfeld serves as the production stage manager, alongside assistant stage manager Fatimah Amill. Casting is managed by C12 Casting, led by Stephen Kopel.
Alongside the primary team, Asmeret Ghebremichael takes on roles as both associate director and choreographer, while Brian Webb is the associate scenic designer. Ricky Lurie fulfills the role of associate costume designer, and Kirk Fitzgerald is the associate lighting designer. Details regarding understudies for the production will be released in due course.
The plot centers on Dougal, a seemingly naive and eternally optimistic British man who arrives in New York for his estranged father’s second wedding. He’s met at the airport by Robin, the bride’s sister, who is struggling with the pressures of being late for work. All Dougal desires is to experience the adventure of the city he has only seen in films, and he hopes Robin will provide much-needed guidance. Drawing upon classic romantic-comedy tropes, this musical weaves together themes of life’s joys and challenges as Dougal and Robin learn about the significant influence a stranger can have on one’s life.
Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) is produced by Kiln Theatre and has previously showcased at the Criterion Theatre in the West End. Fans of the show can find the cast album from the London production available on all major streaming platforms.
