Expectations of Appearance: Kody Brown’s Influence on Sister Wives
Kody Brown’s views on how his wives should present themselves have come under scrutiny, as revealed by his ex-wife Christine Brown. During the mid-season premiere of TLC’s Sister Wives on April 20, Christine shared insights into her marriage while on a road trip with her new partner, David Woolley, as they assisted Janelle Brown with her move to North Carolina.
While discussing their journey, Christine, 53, recounted the pressure she and her sister wives—Janelle, Meri Brown, and Robyn Brown—experienced regarding their appearance. “He liked makeup. It was like, you had to always, always look nice,” Christine remarked. She reflected on past camping trips where, while she and Janelle were busy with chores, Robyn would dedicate significant time to her makeup and appearance.
“Kody would openly praise how they looked, leaving us feeling unnoticed despite our hard work,” Christine explained. This behavior contributed to her aversion to camping trips, which she found frustrating.
Christine, who was the first of the sister wives to leave Kody in 2021, expressed that such scenarios were frequent during her marriage. David characterized Kody’s expectations as “really shallow,” highlighting a perspective that many viewers might resonate with.
Reflecting on these experiences, Janelle supported Christine’s feelings, indicating that she too found the focus on appearance disheartening. However, Janelle managed to approach the camping situation with a different attitude, deciding to enjoy the moment regardless of the irritation caused by Kody’s expectations.
Robyn, on the other hand, had her own context in that particular instance. As she recounted feeling ill during a camping trip while pregnant, her focus was understandably on her health rather than appearance. “I spent the night barfing my guts up,” she admitted, illustrating the complexity of their camping experiences.
Meri Brown echoed Christine’s sentiments, affirming Kody’s long-standing focus on the appearances of those around him. Meri reminisced about how Kody would often buy her outfits early in their dating relationship, reflecting his desire for her to present well, even if she didn’t always feel comfortable with that expectation.
Christine shared the toll this environment took on her confidence, stating that the constant pressure to look good fostered insecurities and comparisons among the sister wives. She noted that Robyn often seemed to occupy a favored position in Kody’s eyes, leading her to feel inadequate within the family dynamic.
Kody’s response to these dynamics revealed that he often felt he was “in the doghouse with somebody,” indicating a continuous cycle of dissatisfaction among the wives.
As of now, Robyn remains the only wife alongside Kody, following the departures of Christine, Janelle, and Meri within a brief span of 14 months. Current episodes of Sister Wives explore how the Brown family is adapting to their altered relationships and navigating life post-separation.
Sister Wives airs Sunday at 10 p.m. ET on TLC.
