Interstellar Breaks New Records in Box Office and Streaming
Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar continues to be celebrated as a landmark in science fiction cinema, and it has solidified its place as one of Nolan’s finest works over a decade after its initial release. The film, released in 2014, was originally a box office triumph, grossing $681 million globally. Following numerous re-releases, its worldwide earnings now stand at approximately $759 million, with the latest re-release achieving a significant milestone.
Interstellar has recently set a record during its re-release in India, where it garnered the highest opening weekend for a Hollywood film re-release. The IMAX version brought in ₹11.6 crore (around $1.3 million) during its limited theatrical engagement in the Indian market. Though the film is screening in IMAX theaters for just a week, the full impact of its re-release performance remains to be seen as only a few days remain in this run.
In recognition of this achievement, Warner Bros. India took to their official X (formerly Twitter) account to celebrate, saying, “A decade later, still rewriting history!” This nods to the film’s intricate narrative that intertwines themes of time and space, proclaiming that Interstellar holds the record for the largest opening for a re-released IMAX film in India.
For those unfamiliar or needing a refresher, Interstellar revolves around Joseph Cooper, played by Matthew McConaughey. He is an ex-NASA pilot turned farmer tasked with leading a crew to find a habitable planet as humanity grapples with an increasingly inhospitable Earth. The film boasts a stellar ensemble cast, including Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Matt Damon, John Lithgow, Timothée Chalamet, David Oyelowo, Michael Caine, and Casey Affleck. Its official synopsis states:
“When Earth becomes uninhabitable in the future, a farmer and ex-NASA pilot, Joseph Cooper, is tasked to pilot a spacecraft, along with a team of researchers, to find a new planet for humans.”
‘Interstellar’ Continues To Dominate Streaming Charts
The film’s success extends beyond box office records into the realm of streaming, where Interstellar remains a dominant force. Recently added to Netflix, it quickly climbed to the top of the platform’s list as one of the most watched films. It also holds a prominent position on Max, where it ranked as the seventh most popular title. Additionally, director Nolan’s other complex sci-fi work, Inception, is currently available on Netflix and has seen similar high viewership numbers during its debut week.
Nolan’s upcoming project appears to mark a shift from the science fiction genre as he prepares to adapt Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey. This film will follow hero Odysseus on his journey home from the Trojan War, featuring familiar faces from Interstellar such as Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway, joined by a varied cast including Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Lupita Nyong’o, and Benny Safdie.
