Tragic Shooting Occurs at Gulfport Church Event
A tragic incident unfolded on Saturday at a church event in Gulfport, resulting in the death of a security guard and deacon. He lost his life while attempting to intervene in a domestic violence situation that escalated during the gathering, as confirmed by local authorities.
Gulfport police arrived at Goldin Sports Complex shortly after 2:00 p.m. and discovered two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds alongside one fatality, stated Gulfport Police Lieutenant Jason Ducre.
The deceased has been identified by Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer as 39-year-old Eddie Shed from McHenry. Switzer reported that Shed succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds at the scene.
Among the injured was a second individual affiliated with Empowerment Ministries Christian Center. That person was airlifted to a hospital in Alabama for treatment, according to police reports.
The suspect involved in the shooting was transported to Singing River Hospital in Gulfport, which previously operated under the name Garden Park Hospital.
Three individuals are currently in custody as part of the investigation, Ducre noted.
Authorities clarified that the shooting originated from a domestic dispute and was not connected to the Spring Break festivities.
The tragic event took place at the conclusion of a Resurrection Day celebration organized by Empowerment Ministries Christian Center. This church is located just down the street from the incident site.
The gathering, which ran from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., included various activities such as food distribution, fellowship opportunities, and Easter egg hunts, according to statements from a pastor.
This story is still developing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
