New Leadership at City Teaching Alliance: Dr. Rahesha S. Amon Appointed CEO
BALTIMORE, July 23, 2024 (Newswire.com) – The City Teaching Alliance, a nonprofit organization focused on fostering culturally adept and effective educators, has announced the appointment of Dr. Rahesha S. Amon as its new Chief Executive Officer.
Dr. Amon brings over 25 years of leadership in education as an accomplished teacher and administrator. Before joining City Teaching Alliance, she was the Senior Executive Director of School Support and Operations at New York City’s Department of Education.
Expressing her enthusiasm for the new role, Dr. Amon stated, “I’m honored and excited to lead City Teaching Alliance into its next chapter. City Teaching Alliance has set an incredible benchmark for teacher development and certification. Hundreds of thousands of students have already benefited from the talented career educators carefully nurtured by our program. However, with our nation facing a widespread teacher recruitment and retention crisis, our work is more critical than ever. It’s time to push for a new standard of excellence for teacher preparation in the United States, with City Teaching Alliance the standard bearers.”
City Teaching Alliance conducts its teacher development and certification programs in multiple cities including Baltimore, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and Dallas. The organization emphasizes hands-on experience through a residency year in an active classroom, complemented by three additional years of teaching, ongoing coaching, and the attainment of a Master of Arts in Teaching. This structure is designed to cultivate educators who are well-prepared to make significant contributions in urban education settings.
Sekou Biddle, the Chair of the City Teaching Alliance Board, praised Dr. Amon’s credentials, saying, “Dr. Amon embodies our mission and values. That, coupled with her deep professional experience and expertise across the public and nonprofit sectors, makes her the perfect fit for City Teaching Alliance. With uncertified and inexperienced teacher numbers rising nationally due to critical classroom shortages, we need to collectively challenge the status quo of how we prepare our educators for the unique challenges and opportunities of classroom teaching. I’m thrilled Dr. Amon will be leading this critical work for City Teaching Alliance.”
Dr. Amon’s own journey in education began as a celebrated classroom teacher. Over the years, she has held various roles, including Educational Coach, Assistant Director of Early Childhood, and Assistant Principal. She became the founding Principal of Frederick Douglass Academy III in the Bronx, New York, and later served as Deputy Superintendent and Superintendent of Community School District 16 in Brooklyn. She holds a doctoral degree from New York University, a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Fordham University, and a Bachelor of Arts from North Carolina Central University, reflecting a robust academic foundation in education.
This leadership transition follows the departure of Peter Shulman, who served as CEO for six years until February 2024.
