Climate Activists Announce End to Soup-Throwing and Disruptive Protest Methods

Since its inception in 2022, Just Stop Oil has garnered significant attention through demonstrations that often revolved around interrupting prominent events and defacing renowned artworks. Their acts included throwing tomato soup at the protective glass of Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers, vandalizing the case of the Magna Carta, and spray-painting historical sites such as Charles Darwin’s grave.

Recently, the organization announced a pivotal transition in its strategy. Just Stop Oil declared, “It is the end of soup on van Goghs, cornstarch on Stonehenge and slow marching in the streets,” signaling a halt to their high-visibility disruption tactics, although they maintain that civil resistance will continue in a different form.

One final protest is scheduled for April 26 in London’s Parliament Square. Following this, a spokesperson confirmed that the group would cease activities under the Just Stop Oil name. This shift comes in light of their recent achievement in halting new licenses for untapped oil and gas fields in the UK, a commitment made by the Labour Party-led government.

James Skeet, a spokesperson for Just Stop Oil, expressed satisfaction with their outcomes, stating, “We achieved what we set out to achieve.” He emphasized the organization’s focus on winnable demands, underscoring their successes through the use of disruptive tactics. “So now it’s on to moving on to the next thing,” Skeet added.

Valerie Brown, a supporter of the group, reflected on the necessity and impact of their actions, asserting they were “exactly the right thing to do.” Brown noted the climate movement’s evolution and growth, highlighting a shift toward new strategies.

Just Stop Oil quickly made a name for itself through protests that disrupted high-profile events, such as their interruption of the Formula 1 British Grand Prix and the BAFTA Awards red carpet. Their actions stirred public debate, but also resulted in severe repercussions for participants, including lengthy jail sentences for some members following protests that blocked the M25 highway.

As of now, 15 members remain incarcerated, with 16 more facing upcoming sentencing, according to reports from the Times. This context of legal ramifications is compounded by the increasing imposition of anti-protest laws across England and Wales. Despite the cessation of their disruptive tactics, Just Stop Oil remains committed to supporting those affected by these new laws and advocating for a broader political change.

In their recent statement, the group criticized the existing legal framework that they believe protects harmful activities while punishing those advocating for environmental consideration. They declared, “Nothing short of a revolution is going to protect us from the coming storms,” indicating their intent to adopt a different approach in their fight against fossil fuel reliance as they adapt to the changing political landscape.
