AOC’s Rising Star Among Democrats: Insights from Political Analysts
A recent poll conducted by CNN indicates a growing approval for Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) among Democratic voters, a trend that Axios reporter Alex Isenstadt discussed on “Inside Politics Sunday.” Isenstadt remarked that Ocasio-Cortez’s ascent in popularity parallels the experiences of the Republican Party following Barack Obama’s election in 2008.
In response to a query about AOC’s potential path toward 2028, Isenstadt suggested that if the Democratic Party supports her trajectory, there could be significant opportunities ahead. He likened her rise to the Tea Party movement within the Republican Party during a time when they were struggling for direction, noting, “The loudest voices in the Republican Party found traction during a period of uncertainty. Perhaps Democrats are facing a similar crossroads, and AOC could embody what party members desire.”
Washington Post’s Paul Kane echoed Isenstadt’s sentiments, underscoring a generational divide in the electorate. He pointed out that younger voters, particularly those aged 30 and under, have participated in only a few elections, with two of those being won by Donald Trump. “There are millions of voters yearning for a fresh perspective, something that resonates more closely with their experiences,” Kane remarked.
A new SSRS poll released on March 16 further illustrates this sentiment, revealing that a significant number of Democrats believe the party must take stronger measures to counteract the Republican agenda. According to CNN, when respondents were asked to identify the Democratic leader who they feel best embodies the party’s core values, Ocasio-Cortez received 10% support, while Kamala Harris garnered 9%, Bernie Sanders 8%, and Hakeem Jeffries 6%.
This poll was conducted between March 6 and 9, just days before Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democratic leaders aligned with Republicans to approve a contentious spending bill, a decision that sparked backlash from within the party ranks.
Ocasio-Cortez expressed her frustration regarding this political maneuver, stating, “There is a profound sense of outrage and betrayal felt throughout the party, not just among progressives. This affects all corners of Democratic voters.” She referred to the decision as “a huge slap in the face,” indicating a growing rift between party leadership and its base.
