Dozens of rescues have taken place following the severe conditions created by Hurricane Milton, which struck the Gulf of Mexico with significant force.

Harrowing Rescue at Sea

In a dramatic incident, a boat captain endured the storm’s wrath overnight before being found clinging to a cooler approximately 30 miles off the coast. The U.S. Coast Guard reported the rescue, highlighting the precarious situation faced by the mariner.

“This man survived in a nightmare scenario for even the most experienced mariner,” remarked Lt. Cmdr. Dana Grady from Sector St. Petersburg. “He likely faced winds ranging from 75 to 90 mph and seas reaching 20 to 25 feet for an extended period.” The captain’s survival was attributed to key safety measures, including wearing a life jacket and using an emergency locator beacon.

Background of the Incident

The captain was operating a fishing vessel that became incapacitated on Monday, situated about 20 miles from John’s Pass. The boat was left adrift while arrangements for salvage were being made.

On Wednesday around noon, the vessel’s owner informed the Coast Guard that the captain had returned to the boat in the early hours to attempt repairs but had not been in contact since.

The Coast Guard managed to establish radio contact with the captain, who reported that he was disabled after his rudder became entangled in a line during his efforts to return to shore.

Conditions Worsen as the Storm Approaches

As Hurricane Milton approached, conditions at sea rapidly deteriorated. Coast Guard officials advised the captain to don his life jacket and remain near the vessel’s locator beacon. Unfortunately, communication was lost with him around 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Coast Guard successfully located and rescued the captain at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, taking him to Tampa General Hospital for further medical evaluation and care.

Conclusion

This incident underscores the dangers posed by severe weather conditions at sea and highlights the importance of safety protocols for mariners. The rapid response from the Coast Guard and the captain’s adherence to safety measures were crucial in preventing a tragedy during a tumultuous situation.
