Stephen Colbert Critiques Trump on Immigration and Climate Change

Stephen Colbert opened Tuesday’s episode of “The Late Show” with a sharp critique of President Donald Trump, blending humor with serious commentary on current political issues. “I don’t know about you, but I am feeling good about America … April Fools!” he quipped, setting the tone for his monologue.

Colbert directed his ire towards Trump’s unconventional approach to climate change, referencing a report that suggested the president aims to portray climate change in a positive light. “All that is bad is now good! War is peace. Hate is love. Higher prices are lower prices,” Colbert proclaimed, continuing his humorous tirade by asserting that discomforts like biting the inside of one’s cheek could be rebranded as “brunch.”

“It’s not warming oceans, it’s unlimited seafood bisque,” he continued, further lampooning Trump’s rhetoric. Referring to a claim made by an expert regarding tick-borne diseases, Colbert playfully hinted that Trump’s efforts would only be validated if he signed an executive order, cheekily titled it “Kid Tick” next to Kid Rock during a recent Oval Office visit.

Colbert then shifted to the topic of immigration, criticizing the administration’s recent actions to deport allegedly illegal immigrants, including individuals from Venezuela, to a prison in El Salvador characterized by dire conditions. He remarked, “Those are the kind of inhuman conditions previously only endured by people who work at Amazon.”

In his commentary, Colbert noted a troubling incident where a legally protected father from Maryland was mistakenly deported to that same prison. He described the situation as “off-the-charts insane,” sarcastically questioning how such an error could occur, remarking, “I mean, who among us hasn’t accidentally popped a black bag over the head of a Maryland father and then rendered him to a hellscape prison in El Salvador?”

Colbert emphasized the gravity of the administration’s claim that it could not bring the wrongly deported man back, prioritizing Trump’s “primacy in foreign affairs” over the safety of individuals. “If that stands then it’s goodbye habeas corpus,” he warned. “Trump’s primacy outweighs the courts, and don’t think that that only applies to folks like this detainee.”

In closing, he raised concerns about due process, arguing that without it, there would be no clarity on citizenship for those affected, stating, “meaning every single person on American soil is now at risk of being disappeared until the day Trump and his goons are finally out of power.”
