The World Cup final is set to occur on July 19, 2026, at the renowned MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
As anticipation builds for the 2026 tournament, which will be held in North America, an exciting addition has been announced: the first-ever halftime show during a FIFA World Cup final. Coldplay has been brought on board to aid in selecting artists for this landmark performance. In a recent social media update, Gianni Infantino, FIFA’s President, revealed that Chris Martin and Phil Harvey, the band’s manager, are curating a “list of artists” for the show.
“I can confirm the inaugural halftime show at a FIFA World Cup final in New York/New Jersey, in partnership with Global Citizen,” Infantino expressed on Instagram. “This will mark a historic milestone for the FIFA World Cup and will be a spectacle worthy of the most prestigious sporting event on the globe.”
The inclusion of a halftime show was first announced by FIFA in September, and while more specifics regarding the performance have yet to be unveiled, it has already generated significant excitement. Unlike the Super Bowl’s structured halftime, which typically allows stars around 30 minutes to prepare and execute their shows, details on the duration and format of the World Cup halftime performance remain unconfirmed. As a point of reference, Kendrick Lamar’s halftime set at the Super Bowl was a compact 13 minutes long, aptly described as a “hip-hop touchdown.”
Looking back at previous Super Bowl performances, Coldplay headlined during the event’s 50th anniversary, where they shared the stage with distinguished guests like Bruno Mars and Beyoncé. Their performance included a vibrant medley of hits spanning the past fifty years, with Martin leading the way on tracks such as “Yellow,” “Paradise,” and “Adventure of a Lifetime.” They transitioned seamlessly into “Uptown Funk” with Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, and closed with Beyoncé’s powerful anthem “Formation.”
