Colleen Atwood, renowned for her work on “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” will be celebrated with Variety’s Creative Impact in Costume Design award at the upcoming SCAD Savannah Film Festival.

With a career spanning over 80 films, Atwood has made a significant impact on the film industry, earning four Academy Awards for her exceptional costume design contributions in notable works such as “Chicago” and “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”

Christina Routhier, Executive Director of the SCAD Savannah Film Festival, expressed enthusiasm about honoring Atwood: “SCAD is excited to continue collaborating with Variety to bestow this year’s Creative Impact Award upon the legendary Colleen Atwood. Her creativity and attention to detail have profoundly influenced filmmaking. Recent works such as ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,’ ‘Masters of the Air,’ and ‘Wednesday’ are examples of her talent. We look forward to sharing her legacy with our students, especially those studying film, production design, and fashion, as they learn from her exemplary vision and craftsmanship.”

The award ceremony will take place on October 31, while Variety’s 10 Artisans to Watch panel, featuring Tangcay, is set for October 29. The festival will run from October 26 to November 2, showcasing a diverse range of films and events.

Hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design, the SCAD Savannah Film Festival attracts over 63,000 attendees each year, serving as a prominent platform for both seasoned filmmakers and emerging talent. The festival opens with a gala screening, followed by a week-long schedule of competition films, premieres, workshops, lectures, and panel discussions across SCAD’s historic venues in Savannah, GA.

In addition to honoring Atwood, Variety will present its “Artisans to Watch” panel with Tangcay and the “Pixels and Pencils” panel led by Clayton Davis. The festival also features Amazon MGM Studios’ LGBTQIA+ Shorts Competition and the “Behind Her Lens” series, highlighting conversations with influential female directors and producers about their journeys and the importance of authentic storytelling.

As part of this year’s festivities, SCAD will unveil a state-of-the-art 17,500 square foot production and costume design facility adjacent to its Savannah Film Studios. This new space will host costume design labs and production shops for a range of creative activities, underscoring SCAD’s commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration in the filmmaking process.
