Colman Domingo to Receive Montecito Award at Santa Barbara International Film Festival
Colman Domingo is set to be recognized with the prestigious Montecito Award during the 40th Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
The award will be presented to Domingo on February 14, coinciding with recognition of his standout role as Divine G in the film “Sing Sing.” This honor comes shortly after he earned the outstanding lead performance award at the Gothams.
“Colman is such a committed performer and one of the most extraordinary talents in film, theater, and television, and he makes it all seem effortless,” stated SBIFF executive director Roger Durling. “His work in ‘Sing Sing’ is unforgettable.”
In a review from Variety, critic Stephen Saito highlighted Domingo’s remarkable performance, noting, “Domingo gives a commanding performance. Watching the light in Divine G’s eyes diminish even just a little amounts to a tragedy that ‘Sing Sing’ need not overstate.”
Last year, Domingo received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor due to his portrayal of Bayard Rustin in Netflix’s “Rustin.” He played a key role in the ensemble cast of the film adaptation of the musical “The Color Purple,” which garnered a SAG Ensemble Nomination. Domingo’s filmography also includes notable performances in “Euphoria,” “Zola,” “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “Selma,” and “Candyman.”
Past recipients of the Montecito Award feature a diverse group of actors including Jeffrey Wright, Penélope Cruz, Amanda Seyfried, Lupita Nyong’o, and many others, cementing its reputation for honoring outstanding achievements in the film industry.
Domingo is currently involved in a range of projects, having recently completed filming for “Michael,” in which he portrays Joe Jackson. Additionally, he will lend his voice to the character Norman Osborn in the Disney+ animated series “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.”
The Santa Barbara International Film Festival will take place from February 4 to 15 and will include screenings, filmmaker Q&As, industry panels, and tributes to celebrated figures in the film world.
