The artist responsible for the portrait of Donald Trump displayed in the Colorado State Capitol is responding to the president’s assertions that she misrepresented his image for political motivations. She maintains that such claims are baseless and asserts that the president’s remarks have adversely affected her professional reputation.
Sarah A. Boardman, the painter who created the contentious portrait, issued a statement on Saturday countering President Trump’s assertion that her skills may have declined with age.
Boardman clarifies that she was commissioned by the Colorado State Capitol Advisory Committee in Denver to create the portrait. She notes that the committee approved all the progress photos she submitted during the painting process, as well as the final work itself.
According to Boardman, the portrait, which was displayed for six years in the Capitol’s rotunda, previously received numerous positive remarks from viewers until it was criticized by President Trump on Truth Social.
She insists that her work was devoid of any political bias, emphasizing that her intention was not to caricature the president.
In her statement, Boardman expressed, “While President Trump is entitled to express his opinions as we all are, the false accusations that I have intentionally distorted the portrait, along with the claim that I have lost my artistic talent as I age, are now having a direct and detrimental effect on my business of over 41 years, which is now at risk of not rebounding.”
President Trump has proclaimed that he would prefer the absence of a portrait rather than allowing Boardman’s work to remain in the Capitol rotunda. In light of the ongoing controversy, Colorado officials decided to remove the painting last month.
Attempts to contact Trump for a response to Boardman’s statement have not yet yielded any acknowledgment.
