Community Rallies to Restore Iconic Christmas Display After Vandalism
Residents of Canmore, Alberta, united to support a local family in restoring a beloved Christmas display just one day after it was vandalized on Boxing Day.
For over a decade, Dave Ouellette has been the driving force behind this festive attraction, which he began assembling when his daughter Rhyanna was born. The display, situated near Bow Trail, has since transformed into a well-known holiday destination, cherished by the community.
“It grew larger each year, evolving into an obsession that ultimately became a part of our town’s character,” Ouellette explained, sharing that he has invested approximately $100,000 into the display throughout the years.
The extravaganza features a rideable train, life-sized statues of iconic characters like Darth Vader and Chewbacca, alongside a multitude of whimsical inflatables. Each year, Ouellette dedicates countless hours to enhance the display, motivated by his love for the holiday season and the joy it brings to the community. His emotional journey took a downward turn when he discovered the destruction caused by vandalism.
“Initially, I was just confused. Every emotion ran through me—anger and resentment were strong feelings, wondering who would do such a thing and why,” he recounted, revealing that around 15 inflatables were damaged.
“I had gone to replace a lightbulb on Rudolph when I realized that many inflatables were deflated. Upon closer inspection, I found them slashed and ripped, with the gingerbread house turned upside down.”
For Rhyanna, the display holds significant sentimental value, and she expressed her disappointment at the vandalism. “It’s a tradition, something I’ve always known. It feels very disrespectful, especially considering the extent of the destruction. It’s just not right,” she remarked.
However, the Ouellette family quickly felt uplifted by the overwhelming support from the community, which stepped up to restore the display to its former glory—only two inflatables could not be salvaged. Neighbors and friends came together to repair decorations, providing words of encouragement and gratitude in the process.
“This experience has truly humbled me. I had no idea how much support I had in this town,” Ouellette added, reflecting on the community’s response.
The support from Canmore residents underscored the importance of this cherished holiday tradition, which continues to welcome visitors and spread festive cheer.
A video obtained by Global News captured the act of vandalism, showing an individual attacking the decorations. Following the incident, one suspect has reportedly turned themselves in to the authorities.
