“Conclave” Cast Reflects on Film Amid Pope Francis’ Health Concerns
The cast of “Conclave” celebrated their win for Best Ensemble at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, but the occasion was clouded by the real-life implications surrounding the election of a pope, particularly in light of Pope Francis’ ongoing health issues.
“We are very, very worried for our pope,” actress Isabella Rossellini expressed to journalists after the awards ceremony. “We love this pope — Papa Francesco, Pope Francis. We wish him well and hope for his recovery.”
Pope Francis, at 88 years old, is reported to be in “critical” condition following an asthmatic respiratory crisis that required high-flow oxygen, as stated by the Vatican on February 22. This situation follows his hospitalization over a week prior.
Addressing the potential for a conclave should the pope pass away, Rossellini noted, “Yes, it would mean a conclave.”
“Conclave” presents a fictional narrative surrounding the closed-door process of electing a new pope, but its story elements resonate with contemporary events. Rossellini mentioned that, being Italian, she and co-star Sergio Castellitto have a certain familiarity with the workings of a conclave, though she acknowledged, “We don’t know exactly what happens during the conclave,” adding that the film does explore the possible discussions that could occur.
At the SAG Awards, Rossellini took the opportunity to extend her good wishes to the pope. “First of all, we would like to wish Pope Francis a quick recovery,” she said, transitioning to laud the film.
Despite being produced two years ago, the film’s relevance has surged, coinciding with real-world events. Co-star John Lithgow remarked on the shifting cultural landscape, stating, “Things change deeply all over the world, and in the zeitgeist… The film is extremely timely, and it’s a very entertaining world because it’s extraordinary storytelling about a social organism electing a leader.” He further pointed out that recent significant elections, like the one held in Germany, highlight the importance of such narratives.
“You cannot help watching ‘Conclave’ and reflecting on the disputes that arise when different factions attempt to determine their leader,” he added, suggesting this dynamic is part of why the film garners substantial attention, alongside its artistry.
Ralph Fiennes, another cast member, found it challenging to articulate why “Conclave” resonates deeply with viewers compared to other cinematic offerings. He speculated, “Perhaps there are themes in the film regarding the integrity of elected office, ambition, power structures, and the value of faith. Who really knows why something captures public interest? It’s hard to pinpoint.”
