The 2025 film awards season escalated with the BAFTA Film Awards, showcasing a night where local favorite Conclave emerged as the clear champion. With an impressive tally of 12 nominations, the film took home four awards, including Best Film, Best British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Editing, marking a significant recognition of its cinematic prowess.
Runner-up The Brutalist celebrated wins in two major categories: Best Director for Brady Corbet and Best Actor for Adrien Brody. The Best Actress category produced an unexpected twist, as Mikey Madison of Anora triumphed over Golden Globe and Critics Choice winner Demi Moore, who starred in The Substance. Despite a stellar week leading up to the event, Anora secured only one additional win, for Best Casting, after an impressive run of accolades from various guilds.
In the supporting categories, Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez) and Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) continued to solidify their dominance. Emilia Pérez also captured the award for Best Film Not in the English Language, with director Jacques Audiard nodding to the film’s controversial star, Karla Sofía Gascón, despite prior distancing due to her past tweets. In contrast, A Real Pain surprised attendees by securing the Best Original Screenplay award for filmmaker and actor Jesse Eisenberg.
The relevance of the BAFTAs grows each year as they serve as a significant precursor to the Oscars. The British Academy boasts a diverse membership of around 13,000 industry professionals, many of whom also belong to the American Motion Picture Academy. As history has shown, outcomes at the BAFTAs can influence Oscar predictions, though the organizations have often varied in their choices.
In previous years, both ceremonies shared a consensus, as seen last year where they recognized the same films in the top categories. However, two years prior saw them diverging in all major categories. Notably, only two of the last ten BAFTA Best Picture winners—Nomadland (2020) and Oppenheimer (2023)—went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture, underscoring the unpredictable nature of these prestigious awards.
David Tennant, known for his role in Doctor Who, returned as host for the BAFTAs, engaging the audience with humor, including pointed jabs at former President Donald Trump. Some of Tennant’s remarks reportedly did not make it to the BBC broadcast, creating a stir regarding what was shared with viewers.
