A man from Waterbury, Connecticut, who claims to have been held captive by his stepmother for over two decades, has issued his first public statement. In his account, the individual has chosen to identify himself only as “S” to maintain his privacy as he navigates his path to freedom and recovery.
“I am free”
“Please call me ‘S.’ This identity is a choice I have made to reclaim my autonomy after years of captivity. I am redefining my sense of self and embracing the freedom to make choices about my life and future.”
“I have survived more than 20 years of confinement and domestic abuse, being imprisoned from the time I was taken out of school at 11 until my escape two months ago, which I orchestrated by setting a fire.”
“I am sharing my story now to reclaim my narrative and take ownership of my experiences.”
“Following my rescue, I feel remarkably stronger than I did the day I was liberated. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the medical professionals who have provided care and support during my recovery. It meant the world to me to celebrate my 32nd birthday for the very first time.”
“I also want to express my gratitude to the first responders and law enforcement agencies working diligently to ensure that those accountable for the abuse I endured face justice. I am thankful to everyone at Safe Haven Waterbury and all those who have contributed to the GoFundMe campaign supporting me through the challenges ahead.”
“I appreciate the help from my conservator and attorney, who are guiding me through the legal proceedings. Their unwavering support has been crucial during this time.”
“While much has been shared about my ordeal, I hope that in the future my entire story will be revealed.”
“I urge all involved in my case to cooperate fully with authorities as I seek justice for the crimes committed against me. I also request that the media and the public respect the ongoing investigations and my need for privacy during this recovery process. This is not merely a story; it is my life.”
“Thank you for your thoughts, messages, and prayers as I work to heal. For all inquiries concerning my recovery or interview requests, please contact David Guarino at Survivors Say, who has graciously agreed to serve as my spokesperson.”
Thank you.
Photos reveal alarming living conditions
His statement follows the release of numerous photographs by law enforcement that depict the conditions inside the home where the man alleges he was confined. The images illustrate the extensive damage caused by the fire he lit as part of his escape plan.
The unsettling photographs expose the grim state of the living area where he stated he was held captive. One image shows the dirty staircase leading to the second floor, where he claims to have been locked away in a small room since age 11.
Charges against stepmother amid denials
Kimberly Sullivan, 57, who is accused of kidnapping and felony assault, has pleaded not guilty to the charges against her. She has been released while awaiting trial but is currently under electronic monitoring.
“There is a rush to judgment, and people seem eager to condemn her, but it’s important to remember that this is a legal process,” remarked her attorney, Ioannis Kaloidis. The next court appearance is set for the upcoming week.
