Last summer, I had the opportunity to visit ThermoWorks’ headquarters in Utah, where I discovered more about the innovative company behind one of my preferred thermometers, the Thermapen. During my visit, they introduced an exciting new product: the RFX Wireless, their first fully wireless thermometer. The representatives emphasized that this device would significantly transform thermometer usage with its groundbreaking features.
According to ThermoWorks, the RFX is designed to offer greater precision and reliability compared to its competitors. Many existing wireless thermometers rely on Bluetooth technology, which can be unreliable in homes made from materials like steel and concrete. In contrast, ThermoWorks has adopted radio frequency (RF) technology with dedicated RFX gateways, aiming for a more stable connection. A professional chef demonstrated the product in action, highlighting the impressive reach of the RFX, which purportedly operates effectively up to 1,500 feet without losing the signal.

My experience with the thermometer revealed an easy setup process, though I found the accompanying app could use some improvements. The starter kit comes with one probe and gateway, but users can opt for configurations with up to four probes or add extra probes individually. Impressively, a single gateway can wirelessly support up to 50 probes, eliminating the hassle of tangled cables—just a streamlined probe and the app once installed. The kits also include an external Pro-Series Air Probe for ambient temperature monitoring, a grate clip, a charging block (with a 10-minute charge providing 52 hours of use), a power adapter, a USB cable, and probe rings.

I was surprised by the versatility of this thermometer compared to others I have used. As long as the temperature remains below 1,000°F, it can accommodate various cooking methods, including deep frying, baking, sous vide, and roasting. It accurately gauges temperatures in the center of cakes while they bake—an excellent feature for bakers—or monitors steak temperatures in an immersion circulator. The ambient air probe is another standout aspect, as ThermoWorks assures that its design minimizes interference by connecting directly to the gateway, making it more accurate than competitors’ probes.

The RFX is NSF-certified for food safety, allowing it to be safely inserted into meat during cooking. However, one of the most appealing aspects is its easy-to-clean design; the probe is dishwasher safe, a notable advantage since many thermometers require manual cleaning. With its multifunctionality, adaptability, and sleek design, I’m only beginning to explore the full potential of this thermometer. It is undoubtedly a must-have for anyone who appreciates the Thermapen brand.
