The Disney X Coperni Pop-Up at Printemps NY
Designers Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant of Coperni launched their limited edition collaboration with Disneyland Paris at the newly inaugurated Printemps New York. Originally unveiled last October at Disneyland Paris, this collection is described as a “celebration of youth, nostalgia, and imagination.” It marks a historic moment as the first fashion brand was permitted to conduct a show within the theme park, allowing the designers to reinterpret Disney’s distinct visual aesthetics through a contemporary lens. Throughout April, the collection will be exclusively available at this New York store.
Printemps New York is designed to feature a series of rotating pop-up events, and the Disney X Coperni collaboration is only the second to grace the space, following another brand. The pop-up, titled ‘Just One Byte,’ is set to showcase a wide range of the collection, making it the most extensive Disney X Coperni presentation available in the United States. To commemorate the launch, Meyer and Vaillant hosted a cocktail reception in New York, a rare occasion for the duo, where attendees savored crémant and canapés while enjoying themed festivities.
“Being here feels fortunate — a French store presenting a collection from an American brand seems like the ideal fusion,” shared Meyer at the event. The celebration included an illustrative artist creating Disney-inspired drawings for guests, enhancing the whimsical atmosphere. “The second floor had a magical ambiance that resonated with our vision,” he remarked, appreciating the unique decor.
In designing the collection, the goal was to create pieces that are wearable in everyday life, rather than costumes. “It was challenging but enjoyable to make the collection fashionable and practical,” Meyer explained. An example is a pair of black Mary Jane shoes adorned with crystal pavé ‘horn’ motifs, melding inspiration from Maleficent with a modern, edgy twist.
The collection, which draws on the designers’ childhood experiences—including visits to Disneyland Paris—features a variety of motifs that reflect classic Disney tales. Elements such as Snow White’s apple, the transformation of humble rags into elegant ballgowns, the enchanted rose from Beauty and the Beast, and the underwater world of The Little Mermaid are prevalent. The launch show and collection are divided into three thematic acts: Park Tribes, incorporating Victorian influences and vintage Disney tees; The Villain, reinterpreting iconic antagonists into contemporary fashion; and The Princess Transformation, showcasing the brand’s innovative approach with designs that mimic floral shapes and butterfly-like silhouettes.
The collection boasts highlights such as bustier gowns, flower sequined dresses, character-inspired T-shirts and hoodies, playful reinterpretations of Disney themes, and even a crown accessory for a dash of daily royalty. One standout item is the Swipe bag featuring Mickey Mouse ears, bringing a lighthearted nod to Disney culture.
Meyer emphasized how location can significantly influence design inspiration, citing their experiences visiting cultural hotspots in New York, like The Met and local galleries. This leads to speculation about how the iconic city’s dynamism might inform their future collections, as they continue to blend their artistic vision with the vibrant urban landscape.
