Corey Flintoff, the 19-year-old son of former England captain and Ashes victor Andrew Flintoff, has secured a two-year rookie contract with Kent County Cricket Club. This development opens the possibility of a sibling rivalry, as he may face off against his younger brother Rocky in the County Championship this season.
Corey, who shares his father’s skill set as a fast-bowling all-rounder, will balance his cricket career with university studies while playing for Kent, a club now led by former Surrey and England skipper Adam Hollioake.
In a recent two-day warm-up match against Essex, Corey demonstrated promise by bowling four effective overs, setting the stage for Kent’s County Championship Division Two opener against Northamptonshire on April 4, following the team’s relegation in the previous season.
Sibling Showdown in Division Two?
Rocky Flintoff, Corey’s 16-year-old brother, is set to join him in Division Two as Lancashire has also faced relegation this year. The two teams are scheduled to meet in Blackpool in June, with the return fixture taking place in Canterbury the following month.
Rocky made an impressive debut in both the County Championship and One Day Cup for Lancashire last summer. Notably, during the winter, he became the youngest player to score a century for the England Lions, eclipsing a record held by his father by reaching three figures against a Cricket Australia XI in Brisbane. During this tour, Andrew Flintoff served as the head coach of the England Lions.
Corey Flintoff’s Commitment to Kent
Upon joining Kent, Corey expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m delighted to continue my development as a player under Adam Hollioake and the excellent coaching staff here. The lads in the dressing room have been very welcoming to me, creating a great atmosphere.” He conveyed his excitement for the future and confidence that Kent is the ideal environment for him to transition into first-team cricket.
Kent’s director of cricket, Simon Cook, noted, “Corey is an extremely exciting young player with exceptional all-round abilities to contribute both with the bat and ball. He is a diligent worker and is determined to establish himself in professional cricket. We’re thrilled that he believes Kent is the right place for him to achieve that.”
