Welcome to Reality Derby, your weekly exploration of the reality television landscape, brought to you by Gold Derby senior editors Marcus James Dixon and Denton Davidson.
This week, we feature an interview with Corey Lay, one of the contestants who faced elimination in the recent episode of The Challenge All Stars: Rivals on MTV. (For those interested, our conversation starts at the 22:02 mark in the video above.) In this discussion, Corey reflects on his alliance with Big T, shares his frustrations regarding Adam Larson and Steve Meinke, and expresses his pride in his performance, despite facing elimination at the hands of Ashley Kelsey and Dario Medrano.
“Making it halfway through the season was a significant achievement,” Corey stated during the interview. “Several formidable competitors who have previously claimed victory have already exited the game, so while there was disappointment in my early departure, I walked away feeling accomplished. All Stars presents an entirely different challenge with a diverse and seasoned group of players.”
As the season was introduced as a Rivals edition, Corey saw a prime opportunity to mend his relationship with Big T and Melissa Reeves. “During Season 39, I unintentionally undermined both of them,” he admitted. “I was eager for a chance to regain Big T’s trust. I understood the hurt my actions caused her, and I wanted to demonstrate that despite my past mistakes, I’m genuinely a good person and value our connection.”
While Corey anticipated that Adam and Steve would move to eliminate him and Big T, he expressed frustration over their tactics. He noted that many details were omitted from the aired version of events. “Throughout the season, numerous players were aiming to target us in every house vote; they just lacked the necessary support,” Corey explained. “I was always on high alert, especially knowing Adam and Steve were intent on turning the house against us. Just before one vote, Adam confronted us, threatening, ‘If Steve and I go into elimination, you’re next.’ Their ultimatum caught us off guard, and we replied, ‘Who do you think you are, Adam?'”
Having teamed up with Big T, Corey revealed his aspirations for a future season, where he would like to partner with one of his top choices: Michaela Bradshaw or Frank Fox.
This episode of Reality Derby also covers highlights from the premiere of Survivor 48 (“The Get to Know You Game”), the 10th episode of The Traitors (“The Power of the Seer”), the ninth episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race (“Heavens to Betsey!”), and the ninth episode of Deal or No Deal Island (“Million Dollar Walk”).
