Upcoming Spinoff of 9-1-1: Nashville and Potential Crossovers
The franchise surrounding 9-1-1 is set to broaden with the introduction of a new spinoff titled Nashville, already approved for production and slated to air on ABC in the upcoming season. While 9-1-1 has not yet been confirmed for a ninth season, the possibility of both series airing simultaneously raises the intriguing prospect of crossover episodes.
Angela Bassett, known for her role as Sergeant Athena Grant on 9-1-1 and serving as an executive producer for both the original series and the spinoff, expressed optimism regarding potential crossover events with Nashville. She remarked on the collaborative potential between the two shows, saying, “It makes some sense.” Bassett indicated that the concept would explore how characters might interact across state lines, adding, “We have to see how we do this interstate, how are we gonna play this, what business I have over there?”
She further speculated on plot possibilities, mentioning scenarios that could involve federal agencies, suggesting intriguing storylines where characters might travel back and forth between California and Nashville. However, she emphasized that logistics and budgetary considerations would ultimately dictate the feasibility of any crossover plans.
Previously, the series Lone Star experienced limited crossover events with the original 9-1-1, with main characters from both series appearing together only a handful of times. Showrunner Rashad Raisani had envisioned two specific crossover ideas that sadly did not materialize. One plan involved the Los Angeles fire department receiving assistance from the Austin-based firehouse during a significant emergency. Another idea was inspired by the International Firefighting Games—a competitive gathering of top firefighters from around the globe—where characters from both series could partake in friendly competitions only to have a real crisis arise in the midst of the festivities.
In casting news, Chris O’Donnell has been confirmed as the first lead for the Nashville spinoff, taking on the role of Captain Don Sharpe, who leads the busiest firehouse in Nashville alongside his son. Described as a rugged fire captain and a devoted family man with hidden complexities, Sharpe’s character seems poised to add depth to the storytelling.
Executive producer Tim Minear shared his enthusiasm for O’Donnell’s casting, noting how well he fits into the franchise. “I think it’ll be fun for him, too, because he was so great on NCIS: LA. But I think he’ll be able to do different things on Nashville because we all know Chris O’Donnell is also very funny,” Minear said, highlighting the actor’s versatility.
Minear also mentioned being a long-time admirer of O’Donnell’s work, recalling a favorite film, Men Don’t Leave, which featured O’Donnell alongside Jessica Lange. He noted the film’s unique place in O’Donnell’s career and praised his performance, saying, “Chris O’Donnell is so good in this movie and Jessica Lange is just lights out great.”
Fans of both 9-1-1 and the upcoming Nashville are left wondering about the potential of crossovers between the two shows. What would viewers like to see if such a collaboration comes to fruition? Your thoughts and predictions can be shared in the comments section below.
