County Championship: Essex Claims First Win of the Season
In a thrilling encounter in Division One of the County Championship, Essex secured their first victory of the season, defeating Worcestershire by 28 runs. This marks a significant achievement for Essex as they strive for a strong start in the competition.

Surrey Settles for Draw Against Sussex
Surrey, currently sitting seventh in the league, played to a draw against Sussex, marking their third draw of the season. The match showcased notable performances, including Dan Lawrence’s impressive 117 runs and wicketkeeper Ben Foakes who contributed with a solid 60. Surrey’s first innings concluded with a score of 490 all out, aided by a five-wicket haul from Sussex’s James Coles, who finished with figures of 5 for 108.
In response, Sussex ended the day unbeaten with Tom Haines and Daniel Hughes both remaining at the crease, having scored 69 and 49 runs, respectively, closing on 132 without the loss of a wicket.
Rain-Affected Matches in Division One
The match between Hampshire and Somerset was impacted by rain, resulting in a draw. Sean Dickson finished the game unbeaten on 77, and Tom Abell supported him, ending with 27 not out.
Yorkshire’s match against Durham also concluded without a winner due to rain. Their captain, Jonny Bairstow, remained not out at 86, contributing significantly to Yorkshire’s total of 277 for 6. Durham’s bowling attack was effective, with Ben Raine, Matthew Potts, and Colin Ackermann each taking two wickets.
In another encounter, Warwickshire faced Nottingham in a match that also ended in a stalemate, hampered by inclement weather. Ed Barnard topped the batting for Warwickshire, finishing not out on 40 from 149 balls, while Oliver Hannon-Dalby added a slow seven runs from 62 deliveries, leaving the side at 181 for 6 at the conclusion of the match.
Division Two Highlights
In Division Two, England opener Zak Crawley demonstrated his form with an unbeaten 54 runs for Kent against Gloucestershire. However, it was the outstanding bowling performance from Tom Price that drew attention, as he took four wickets for just 33 runs, leaving Gloucestershire struggling at 124 for 6 at the end of play.
