Couple Removed from Ryanair Flight Over Unpaid In-Flight Snacks

A British couple experienced an unsettling incident when they were removed from a Ryanair flight for failing to settle their bill for snacks. The flight was from Tenerife, Spain, to Bristol, UK, on March 28.

According to reports from SWNS, Ann-Marie Murray, 55, ordered Pringles, a bottle of water, and a Coca-Cola, totaling nearly $9. However, trouble arose when she attempted to pay. Murray stated that the in-flight payment system rejected her credit card, and between her and her husband, they did not have sufficient cash to cover the purchase.

Despite her husband proposing to pay once they landed in Bristol, the flight crew declined this offer, maintaining that the couple had “refused to pay.” The crew reportedly withheld their boarding passes and informed them that law enforcement would be waiting upon their arrival in the UK.

When the flight landed, officers were indeed present to escort the couple off the aircraft. Murray recounted her disbelief at the situation, expressing her embarrassment and frustration, stating, “I thought it was a joke when the crew said they had called the police.”

In a statement, Ryanair confirmed that the crew requested police assistance because the couple’s inability to pay led to disruptive behavior and a failure to comply with crew directives. However, Murray refuted the claim of being disruptive, asserting that their interaction with the staff had been calm.

A video obtained by PEOPLE showed Murray explaining to the police that the entire situation was merely “a silly misunderstanding.” She mentioned that other passengers had informed her that the card payment system had failed on a previous flight, raising questions about the reliability of the service.

Ryanair responded by denying that there were any issues with the payment terminals during the flight, stating that no other passengers experienced payment difficulties. Furthermore, Murray sought access to surveillance footage of the incident but was reportedly told by the airline that the video would not be available.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges and frustrations passengers can face regarding in-flight services and payment systems, drawing attention to the potential ramifications of seemingly minor disputes at 30,000 feet.
