Craig Bellamy: Wales Manager Thrives in North Macedonia Turmoil

Wales’ Draw with North Macedonia: A Game of Missed Opportunities

The late-game turmoil dramatically shifted the expected outcome of the match.

Wales had maintained control for the majority of the 90 minutes but appeared to be caught off guard when Joe Allen’s backpass was intercepted by North Macedonia’s Bojan Miovski, who capitalized on the mistake, igniting celebrations among the home team’s fans and players.

In the aftermath of this setback, Wales abandoned their traditional organized approach, opting for a more direct style. They swiftly played the ball towards towering striker Kieffer Moore, who directed it down for fellow substitute David Brooks to hammer the ball home from close range.

Despite the exhilaration of the moment, Wales’ manager Craig Bellamy couldn’t mask his disappointment. “Watching that unfold was surreal, but I must admit that leaving with merely a point frustrates me, especially given our performance,” he noted.

“Considering how the game unfolded, we were in command, but football can be quite harsh,” he added. “Perhaps my lack of experiencing defeat in my brief tenure as manager adds to the feeling that we could have achieved more.”

This match marked Bellamy’s eighth encounter at the helm of Wales’ national team, where he remains unbeaten with a record of four wins and four draws, showcasing a promising pathway following their Nations League promotion and a commendable start in World Cup qualifiers.

His disappointment in Skopje was justified; North Macedonia posed little threat, while Wales failed to translate their dominant possession into a victory.

Once the initial excitement wears off, Bellamy will need to emphasize to his squad that they squandered a valuable chance.

Currently, Wales sits second in Group J, trailing North Macedonia by goal difference, yet they face tougher challenges ahead, especially with top-seeded Belgium still to come.

“This point could have been immensely valuable. Reflecting on our performance and how I interpreted this game, I believe we should have aimed for three points. Time will reveal if this was a crucial point,” Bellamy remarked.

“We understand that opportunities in international football can be scarce, but we did create significant chances. In hindsight, it seems we should have capitalized for a full three points.”
