Wonderland and Robot Invader have announced their merger, resulting in the formation of a new entity called Create Worlds. This collaboration aims to combine Wonderland’s innovative Wonderland Engine with Robot Invader’s Story Machine, creating a comprehensive suite of development tools tailored for the web gaming industry. Create Worlds is committed to enhancing accessibility for developers, addressing common challenges, and streamlining workflows.

Both companies have a history of working together, highlighted by the launch of Dead Secret Circle Web, which effectively transitioned a Meta Quest VR game into a web format. Currently, Create Worlds is also developing additional projects, such as a web-based iteration of the puzzle game Rise of the Blobs, which is set to be released in a playable alpha version soon.

Jonathan Hale, the founder of Wonderland and the new CEO of Create Worlds, expressed excitement about this merger: “We see the web as an opportunity to bring new momentum to Robot Invader’s portfolio of games. At the same time, porting the games strengthens our developer tools Wonderland Engine and Story Machine and showcases their potential.”

Investing in Web Gaming

In an interview with GamesBeat, Hale elaborated on the benefits of merging the two companies, noting that it allows them to provide developers with tools for creating both 2D and 3D games. He emphasized the exceptional optimization for web performance offered by their tools, which feature rapid rendering capabilities in both 2D and 3D, compatibility with iOS Safari, and quick loading times. Developers can expect small file sizes and the ability to continuously download assets, all while benefiting from workflow efficiencies such as project packaging in less than a second and instantaneous launching on devices, particularly compared to platforms like Unity Web.

Web developers in the gaming sector have traditionally encountered severe obstacles such as distribution challenges and a lack of accessible development tools. Create Worlds aims to alleviate these issues by simplifying the game publishing process and enhancing game optimization.

Hale further stated, “There are clear signs that web gaming is about to explode! Traditional web gaming portals like Poki, Crazy Games, Yandex Games, and others are witnessing tens of millions of monthly active users (MAUs). Furthermore, major platforms like Discord, YouTube, and Telegram are now integrating web-based gaming features. The $99 billion mobile gaming sector is experiencing systemic changes that web gaming is strategically positioned to benefit from. The web’s lower user acquisition costs allow players to engage with games without the need for installations, providing a distinct advantage over native applications. As the quality disparity between native and web games diminishes, web-based games are expected to grow at an accelerated pace compared to their native counterparts.”
