National Geographic Returns to the World of Penguins with New Documentary Series
Two decades after the global success of the Oscar-winning film March of the Penguins, National Geographic is set to captivate audiences once again with its upcoming series, Secrets of the Penguins, which will premiere on April 20.
Wildlife filmmaker Bertie Gregory, who dedicated two years to filming this captivating three-part series, expresses his enthusiasm, stating, “How can you not have a fascination with penguins? Their upright stance and striking tuxedo-like appearance appeal to everyone, and let’s not overlook those adorable fluffy chicks. My hope is that viewers will marvel at their remarkable abilities and feel inspired to protect penguins and their natural habitats.”
The series boasts executive production by renowned filmmaker James Cameron and features narration by actress Blake Lively. Secrets of the Penguins explores various global locations, showcasing these unique animals as they navigate both land and sea in ways never seen before.
Gregory emphasizes the unprecedented nature of the footage captured during filming, including a daring mother penguin confronting a large sea lion, a fascinating colony of cave-dwelling penguins residing in Africa’s Namib Desert, and a remarkable instance of interspecies breeding producing a chick in the Falkland Islands.
One of Gregory’s standout moments from the series features emperor penguin chicks leaping off a 50-foot cliff in Antarctica. He remarks, “I had heard whispers of this behavior, yet no one has captured it on film for television until now. I never imagined it could really be happening.”
Interestingly, the interactions extend beyond the crew, as the penguins themselves are just as intrigued by humans. Gregory reflects, “One of the delightful aspects of working with penguins is their inquisitive nature. Many of them approached us, having never encountered a human before. What feels extraordinary to us is equally novel for them!”
