Note: This story contains spoilers from “Doc” Episode 10.
The first season of “Doc” concluded with a blend of tensions and revelations, leaving audiences intrigued about the romantic dynamic between Amy, Michael, and Jake. The final episode, aired on Fox, escalated the drama with a significant cliffhanger that promises further exploration in the next season.
In Episode 10, the effects of a kiss between Amy (played by Molly Parker) and Michael (Omar Metwally) are felt amid a chaotic influx of new patients due to a train derailment. The narrative takes a darker turn as Amy discovers Richard (Scott Wolf) had misled the board regarding her involvement in a patient’s death. The real culprit is revealed to be Richard himself, whose mistake during a critical medical emergency resulted in tragedy. The fallout sees Richard dismissed from his position as chief, while Amy manages to clear her name and contemplates the possibility of stepping into the chief role herself in the future.
The dramatic tension escalates further when Jake (Jon-Michael Ecker), feeling insecure, returns to the hospital only to find Amy and Michael in an intimate moment in Michael’s office, setting the stage for emotional complexities in the next season.
Showrunner Barbie Kligman expressed the intent behind the season’s finale, stating, “We wanted it to be messy. The show is messy, and that’s what’s compelling about it. Leaving viewers wanting more is always important, and we appreciated that Fox embraced the cliffhanger.”
The series has garnered substantial attention, with its premiere episode on January 7 achieving over 16 million views by late February—the network’s most successful debut since “9-1-1: Lone Star.” This reception led to a second season renewal for “Doc,” consisting of a notable 22 episodes, a format that is increasingly rare in today’s competitive television landscape.
Another element of intrigue from the Season 1 finale is the fate of Richard, who exits the hospital after being publicly ousted. Both Kligman and executive producer Hank Steinberg hinted that audiences may not have seen the last of Dr. Miller. “Initially, his role was designed for just one season, but I’m hopeful he will make a return,” Kligman noted, indicating that the extended season might provide opportunities for his character’s storyline to evolve.
Despite navigating emotional turbulence, Amy appears to have regained her professional footing by the end of the first season. Having struggled with her past, including a traumatic brain injury that caused her to lose significant memories, she is now ready to dedicate herself fully to her medical career. However, unresolved tension with Gina (Amirah Vann), who also had a tense moment with Amy during the finale, suggests further complications ahead.
Steinberg further hinted at the direction of Season 2, stating, “We have many stories to explore beyond just Amy. The addition of new characters will enhance our narrative, allowing us to delve into more complex dynamics.”
“Doc” Season 1 is currently available for streaming on Hulu.
