Creature Commandos Episode 4: A Surprising Glimpse at the Justice League
The fourth episode of Creature Commandos has introduced a highly anticipated glimpse of the Justice League within the DC Cinematic Universe (DCU), but not in the manner fans might have expected. In this episode, titled “Chasing Squirrels,” the Justice League appears in a brief, dark vision that raises more questions than it answers.
Expectations were high for the series’s depiction of this iconic superhero ensemble, particularly in the context of the new direction being carved out by directors James Gunn and Peter Safran. However, the word ‘debut’ seems to be a generous label; the Justice League’s appearance is as fleeting as it is unsettling, with showrunner Dean Lorey advising viewers that they “shouldn’t infer” any greater context from this fleeting scene.
Warning: Spoilers Ahead! If you haven’t watched the fourth episode yet, be aware that major plot points are about to be revealed.
In a pivotal scene within “Chasing Squirrels,” occurring about seven minutes into the episode, we are introduced to a vision conjured by the character Circe, who appears to be a central antagonist in the series. She offers this vision to Amanda Waller, Rick Flag Sr., and John Economos in an effort to convey a dire warning about Princess Ilana and her homeland, Pokolistan.
Circe’s abilities allow her to reveal a dystopian future wherein Ilana and Pokolistan exercise tyrannical control over the globe. The vision presents a chilling tableau: the Justice League, alongside various other beloved heroes and antiheroes, lie dead or incapacitated, depicted as crucified or speared on a grim battlefield strewn with skulls.
Among those portrayed in this gruesome imagery are household names like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, as well as a variety of characters from the DC lore including Robin, Peacemaker, Supergirl, a member of the Green Lantern Corps, and an unmistakably comic-accurate Aquaman.
As fans dissect the scene, several questions emerge regarding the implications of such a grim prophecy. How formidable is Pokolistan, capable of overwhelming and defeating many of the DCU’s metahumans? Is this a definitive future, or merely a potential outcome that can be avoided? Moreover, what does the demise of these heroes suggest about the larger narrative arc being crafted in the DCU? In pursuit of clarification, I reached out to Lorey for insights on the matter.
“That scene is specific to the story [of Creature Commandos],” Lorey stated regarding whether this dark portrayal sets the stage for future elements in the DCU. “It’s not really meant to infer anything but, you know, it shows a very dark vision of what could happen if actions aren’t taken to prevent it. But, no, I would say fans shouldn’t infer anything about the Justice League [from that].”
This response suggests that while the scene is impactful within the context of Creature Commandos, it does not signal any broader implications for the Justice League in the reimagined DCU. As fans digest this development, one thing is clear: the journey within this new cinematic landscape is marked by complexity and uncertainty, leaving audiences eager for more.
