Romero’s Apology and Tottenham’s Injury Woes

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou confirmed that defender Cristian Romero has expressed regret for his recent comments regarding the club’s ownership. The Argentine’s remarks came after a frustrating 4-3 defeat against Chelsea, a match in which Spurs initially led 2-0.

During an interview with Spanish broadcaster Telemundo Deportes, Romero highlighted the club’s lack of financial investment compared to its rivals. He remarked, “something is going wrong, hopefully, they [the board] realize it,” pointing out how other clubs are spending more on player recruitment.

Postecoglou addressed the situation, stating, “He realizes that a lot of what he said was good, but some wasn’t the right way of dealing with it. The same way I wouldn’t criticize a player publicly.” He emphasized that he had a conversation with Romero, who apologized for his approach, acknowledging that it was not the appropriate method to express his concerns. The manager noted, “It shows he cares. There’s a way to do it, and this wasn’t it.”

In terms of team news, both Romero and fellow centre-back Micky van de Ven made their return to the starting lineup against Chelsea after recovering from injuries. However, Romero’s comeback was cut short when he was substituted just 15 minutes into the match due to a new issue, while Van de Ven left the game in the 79th minute.

Both defenders are now set to miss Tottenham’s Europa League clash against Rangers at Ibrox, and Postecoglou revealed that he is still awaiting further information regarding the severity of their injuries. “We’re still getting some clarity around the prognosis,” he said. “Both have picked up injuries that will keep them out again. That’s disappointing for us because obviously we’re pretty thin on numbers. We’ve had to deal with that for quite a while now.”

On a different note, midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is eligible to play in the upcoming match against Rangers, despite currently serving a domestic suspension related to a racial slur directed at teammate Son Heung-min.
