The Brutalist is anticipated to dominate at the 2025 Critics Choice Awards, with predictions suggesting it will secure multiple top honors including Best Picture, Best Director for Brady Corbet, Best Actor for Adrien Brody, and Best Cinematography. This gripping narrative centered around a Holocaust survivor’s challenging experiences in America has caught the attention of industry professionals and audiences alike.
These awards are conferred by the Critics Choice Association, which comprises over 580 members from broadcast, radio, and online media, including critics and entertainment journalists. Notably, this voting body has diverged from the Academy Awards’ outcomes on several occasions in recent years, finding common ground only five times in the last decade. Some of these instances include the alignment on films like Spotlight (2015) and Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022).
Following The Brutalist, projections from Gold Derby indicate that Emilia Pérez is favored in three categories: Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña, Best Original Song for “El Mal,” and Best Foreign Language Film. Despite some controversy stemming from star Karla Sofía Gascón due to problematic past comments, the movie had received significant accolades, including four Golden Globe wins. With the Critics Choice voting concluding on January 10, it remains to be seen if the film will surpass current expectations given its earlier triumphs in the awards season.
Wicked is also projected to perform well, with expectations for it to clinch three awards: Best Film Ensemble, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design. Meanwhile, A Real Pain is anticipated to win for Best Comedy Film and Best Supporting Actor for Kieran Culkin. Although Culkin has established himself in the category, the absence of a Best Picture nomination could affect his chances.
Despite missing out on Oscar nominations, Challengers may snag wins for Best Editing and Best Original Score at the Critics Choice Awards. If successful, it would highlight the film’s unique score achievements at both the Globes and the Critics Choice without the Academy recognizing it. Additionally, The Substance is expected to perform well, with Demi Moore likely to follow up her Globe win with a Best Actress award and potential recognition for its hair and makeup team.
